GENEVA: The World Trade Organization (WTO) has agreed to set up an expert panel to investigate China’s complaint against the European Union’s imposition of steep tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs).
The move follows the EU’s decision in October to levy additional tariffs of up to 35% on Chinese-made EVs, citing the impact of alleged state subsidies that, according to Brussels, distorted fair competition and undercut European manufacturers.
Beijing responded by filing a formal case with the WTO, asserting that the EU’s measures violate global trade rules. “China will… take all necessary measures to firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies,” China’s Ministry of Commerce stated.
At a closed-door session of the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body on Friday, China’s representative reiterated the country’s stance, describing the EU’s action as inconsistent with international trade obligations, a Geneva-based trade official confirmed.
